Brother

First thing I need to address... what is up with Danila and Viktor's baggy shirts??? and the rolled up sleeves??? 😂😂👌

That aside, there are some really great aspects of Brother that stood out to me. I think out of all the films we have seen so far, this one had the most suspense and kept me the most engaged throughout the film. I love it when a movie can put me at the edge of my seat, almost holding me hostage until the plot further develops. It is a strange way to word it, but simply put, you just can't take your eyes off the film. I think there were several of these moments in this film, and I overall very much enjoyed it.

In addition to the engaging plot, intertwined were some really great views of St. Petersburg (also referred to in the film as Leningrad). The slow-walking city shots that appear from time to time create an amazing atmosphere. I think it fit well with the mobster setting, as well as the music that was overlayed each scene.

Music is a major element in this film as portrayed by the main character Danila's interest in music. No matter where he goes he always has his Walkman on him, and in the event he doesn't he will ask whoever he is with to put some music on instead (ex. hostage scene in the apartment and in the truck at the end). In fact, music ends up saving his life quite literally when it takes a bullet that would have otherwise been a lethal wound. Yet there is something more to the music in this film I think. Perhaps music not only saves his life but also gives his life meaning, meaning that he can't seem to find in his life as a criminal. During the scene where the German takes care of his wound, Danila asks him, "Why are we here?". Then, in a later scene, he sits down to enjoy a song, and almost for a moment, he seemed to find something of significance in the music he was listening to.

I would watch this movie again. I think there is more here than just what I found for sure.

  1. It is really hard to remember whether or not the music that Danila listened to had anything to with setting up the mood during the movie, however, it does influence how Danila reacts during scenes in the movie.

  2. Their clothing had me rolling as well, they could've fit the whole cast into those shirts. xD But overall I think this allowed us to really see how people dressed not to long ago. Great review.

  3. I always think this about mens clothing in the 90s!! Everything is always 3x more baggy then needed. I also agree with the film having a great mobster vibe throughout the whole thing. The darker lighting, angles, and settings really portrayed the film well.
